PTA and RTAs were established in 1970 under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965 and the Motor Vehicle Rules, 1969. These authorities functioned under the administrative control and supervision of the Board of Revenue Department, which managed the overall affairs of the transport sector until the year 2006. Thereafter, in 2006, the Transport Wing was formally separated from the administrative control of the Board of Revenue, and a new entity named the Transport Department was constituted to independently manage and regulate transport affairs in the province.
